Jeffrey Rollings is the chair of the firm’s Copyright Department, as well as a member of the Litigation and Licensing Departments. Mr. Rollings oversees all of the firms’ copyright registration matters, and has handled several complex appeals of refusals to register by the Copyright Office. He has litigated copyright cases in many federal courts, and also litigates many of the firms’ trademark, trade dress, trade secret, and patent cases, in both state and federal courts, and before the Trademark Trial and Appeal Board and arbitration panels, all over the country. His litigation experience includes all aspects of case initiation, management, discovery, motion practice, and trial, including both jury trials and bench trials.
Mr. Rollings also frequently handles “WIPO” domain name disputes for the firms’ clients, many of which are submitted to arbitration panels of the World Intellectual Property Organization in Geneva, Switzerland under the widely accepted ICANN rules and regulations governing domain name. He also regularly counsels clients on matters involving the proper handling and marketing of proprietary and confidential documentation and information, and is frequently called upon to craft and negotiate non disclosure, non-compete, and other similar agreements, or to devise creative solutions to facilitate disclosure without compromising the value and security of closely held information.
Mr. Rollings also handles a great deal of the firms’ licensing matters, and is a proficient draftsman and negotiator of licenses in each of the trademark, patent, copyright, and publicity rights areas. He has designed licensing programs for major national companies from the ground up, and negotiates trademark and patent licensing transactions on a regular basis. Mr. Rollings’ licensing experience includes drafting and negotiating licenses for sporting goods companies, tool companies, cosmetic companies, fashion designers, jewelry wholesalers and retailers, clothing and footwear designers, music companies, advertising agencies, and video game companies, to name just some.
Despite spending the last 13 years at Lackenbach, Mr. Rollings has practiced law for over 25 years and brings a unique and diverse background to the firm. He has practiced not only intellectual property law, but also general civil litigation and transactional corporate law at large international law firms in New York City, Los Angeles and San Francisco, (Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher and Brobeck, Phleger & Harrison). Prior to that, Mr. Rollings enjoyed quite a different life in the music industry, both as a merchandising professional and as a songwriter and bandleader. His varied experiences and interests have resulted in his office becoming a landing spot for matters which the firm might not otherwise handle, including state court civil litigations and contract disputes which do not involve traditional intellectual property concerns.
Mr. Rollings graduated with an A.B. from Cornell University, and magna cum laude from Indiana University School of Law where he was a member of the Law Review, Order of the Coif, and Moot Court Board.
